RECREATION & WILDLIFE
The Kaycee Outdoorsman Retreat is home to occasional mule deer and antelope. Bordering more than 3,000 acres of public land, the property offers expansive views and abundant wildlife. The landscape transitions from Kaycee (approx. 4,660 ft) toward the high mountains, where deep canyons define the terrain. The Middle Fork of the Powder River has carved dramatic “dip canyons,” including Outlaw Canyon and Beartrap Canyon, with elevations dropping 1,000 to 1,400 feet.
High plains and the draws between steep cliffs feature long drainages, sagebrush-covered hills, and grassy parks that serve as critical winter habitat for elk and mule deer. The Ed O. Taylor Wildlife Habitat Management Area, located 19 miles west of town, provides public access to the canyons and river for hunting and fishing. This 10,215‑acre remote wilderness, established in 1971, protects essential winter range for elk and year‑round habitat for mule deer. To safeguard wintering wildlife, the area has a mandatory seasonal closure and is open only from May 15 through December 31.
The Kaycee Outdoorsman Retreat is located in Area 33 for deer and elk hunting and Area 21 for antelope. Guests can also enjoy the convenience of a private shooting range with multiple targets designed to simulate real‑world hunting scenarios.
